Welcome to Foundation Training
Foundation training programmes are available at both Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells hospital sites with cross-site placements in most specialties. There are Programme Directors for FY1 and FY2 on each site as well as a team of Medical Education administrators to answer your queries and help in any way they can. Feedback always highlights how well supported our trainees feel and how friendly the staff throughout the hospital are.
We provide 57 FY1 and 54 FY2 programmes, offering a range of specialties and including three linked programmes so you can spend both years in the Trust. We have a comprehensive programme of taster weeks and encourage our Trainees to spend time in a specialty they have an interest in pursuing as a career. Simulation has a high profile in the Trust with a dedicated Simulation Faculty running sessions for all Foundation trainees.
Outside of work there is a vibrant social life including regular ‘Pay Day’ themed events organised by the Mess committees. The Christmas Revue is organised by the Foundation Trainees and the annual cricket match against the Consultants is a popular and competitive affair. Winter and Summer Balls are also a good opportunity to dress up and have a good time with a wide cross-section of staff coming together.

The ROADS to Success
Choosing the right specialty is a critical decision that all junior doctors face each year. Until now most trainees have had to fight their own way through the multiple labyrinths of opportunities, choices, written applications and interviews. Caroline Elton and Joan Reid have structured a handbook (now in its third edition) to support both trainees and their supervisors throughout the career planning process. This is a practical handbook packed with essential information, self-assessment exercises and insightful tips to ensure that every junior doctor is headed on ‘The ROADS to Success’.
ROADS is provided free to all STFS trainees via trusts, in either PDF, web-based or hard-copy format. Current Foundation Trainees at MTW can view the handbook via the Resources section of the MTW Intranet.
