Across the Trust we have superb low and high fidelity simulation training facilities with a Trust lead for Simulation, Dr Paul Moran who is also supported by a dedicated simulation team who work with clinical staff to continually develop and improve our simulation training programmes.

Our Facilities: We have clinical skills rooms at both sites, which are equipped with a wide variety of training equipment including adult manikins on each site and an obstetric & two paediatric manikins at Tunbridge Wells Hospital. We are always open to discussion on how our equipment can be used to the benefit of trainees in the hospital.

The Skills and Laparoscopic Suite: The Laparoscopic courses are designed to provide Trainees an excellent opportunity to develop and polish their open and laparoscopic skills in a safe environment in order to enable them to assess, manage and operate on a wide range of surgical conditions in a clinical environment with a strong emphasis on patient safety and how to avoid pitfalls.

A wide range of courses are on offer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology ,i.e. Basic Practical Skills course , Intermediate Laparoscopic courses for Gynaecologists , Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Course with THUNDERBEAT.
Other popular courses include Holmium Laser use in treatment of prostatic , stone and Bladder tumour disease. Delegates get the opportunity to perform simulated HoLEP using the Lumenis Surgical Simulator.
Courses in other specialties include Basic Surgical Skills in Ophthalmology, and Respiratory Medicine Courses e.g. Safety in chest Drain Insertion, Thoracic Ultrasound course and Basic Bronchoscopy and EBUS guided TBNA.

Faculty Training: Much of the training of new Faculty happens ‘on the job’ during sessions, you will be supported by our team of experienced doctors and nurses in delivering all aspects of sim training.  We also encourage new members to undertake Faculty development courses, you can read more about the courses here: or register interest at the following email address:

  • Please see the attached flyer for further details.

Our Training: As one of the major features of simulation training is to enhance team working and communication, we aim to run our sessions as multidisciplinary training with Nurses, ODPs and Midwives attending and cross specialties where possible. Most Trainees find the experience a valuable learning opportunity and usually enjoyable after the nerves have worn off!

Overall our aim is to increase patient safety through providing training of a high standard within simulation and having the facilities to practice in a ‘safe’ environment.
